Our emerging vision

Our vision builds on the analysis the project team has undertaken, and the consultation feedback received from the community and stakeholders.

"Rugby town centre will be a successful and sustainable destination at the heart of a contemporary market town.

"To ensure Rugby town centre fulfils its potential in the future, it must attract people and secure greater levels of investment.

"This will be achieved through the delivery of a mix of relevant and vibrant uses, set within a positive urban environment which appeals to the existing and future communities of the Borough and beyond. These new uses will be supported by a 21st century transport system and digital infrastructure."

Context

Rugby was established as a market town in 1255, but population growth accelerated from the early 1800s – as a result of Rugby School drawing people to live nearby.

The next key phase of growth came in the early-mid 1800s, with the arrival of the railways. By the mid-1850s there were five railway lines meeting at Rugby, marking Rugby as a key railway town.

Rugby still benefits from fantastic connections by rail, only 49 minutes to London, and within easy reach of key towns and cities across the Midlands – making it an attractive proposition for residents and businesses.

Rugby’s growth has always been linked to its connectivity. We believe its future success will depend on attracting people and investment to the town centre – using the connectivity to bring people into the centre as much as possible.

To do this we must build on Rugby’s strengths and its heritage, whilst making it resilient and attractive in the future
